So after 5 Weeks of football the Big Ten picture is far from clear. It seems like there is Penn State then everyone else. After a dominating performance over the Illini Saturday Night there is no doubt in my mind that the Nittany Lions are the team to beat. Of course nothing is set in stone as we will learn much more about Penn State when they travel to Wisconsin in two weeks. That in my opinion will tell everyone in the country just how good of a team they are once they are able to defeat a top of the line opponent on the road.
As for the rest of the Big Ten it's a complete mess. I don't think Ohio State is a solid number 2 in the Big Ten but right now they are and anyone is capable of catching them. With that being said I believe everyone in the Big Ten is a contender. Minnesota is greatly improved as they weren't blown out by the Buckeyes on the road. Indiana has a defense that has struggled and suffered injuries but their spread offense is explosive and can put up points against anyone.
There is then the question at who the third best team in the Big Ten is right now. I'm going to say Michigan State over Wisconsin because Michigan State has been consistent and have a monster at running back in Javon Ringer. The only question I have about Michigan State is whether Ringer can continue to carry such a large load as he has 187 carries already which is almost twice as many as Iowa running back Shonn Greene who has the second most carries at 99. Also can quarterback Brian Hoyer step up his game when the better defenses in the Big Ten load the box forcing him to pass?
In my opinion Wisconsin just hasn't be consistent as can be seen by what happened to them this past weekend. They lead Michigan 19-0 at half and lose 27-25. I feel their biggest problem is that they don't have a passing attack to compliment running back PJ Hill. If they can't put together a better passing attack they will struggle heavily in the Big Ten when defenses stop the run.
Then there is the rest of the field made up of Illinois, Iowa, Indiana, Minnesota, Purdue, Michigan and Northwestern.
Any one of these teams could emerge in the Big Ten picture come the end of the season.
Coming off a big win over Wisconsin I think Michigan has momentum but is too inexperienced on offense to play consistent enough to win in the Big Ten.
Illinois has the offense but the defense can't seem to put it together. Against Penn State there were times where the defense looked great but then there were other times where they couldn't tackle which has been an issue for them all year.
Iowa looks like a team that can be explosive and play with anyone in the Big Ten. The offense is coming around and is led by running back Shonn Greene. Last weekend against Northwestern quarterback Ricky Stanzi looked great. If the special teams were able to hold on to the football I believe the game would have been a blow out. They have the defense and the offense has the potential to be unstoppable, they just have to limit the mistakes.
On to Northwestern who is an impressive 5-0 to start the season. However, after watching them play Iowa I don't think they stand a chance. They were practically handed the game and they still couldn't pull away. Their offense had bright spots but they still didn't look like the normal Northwestern offense that I'm used to seeing.
What about Indiana? They have an explosive offense led by quarterback Kellen Lewis but the defense is non existent. Too many injuries for their defense to handle and they will not be able to do much in the Big Ten but the offense could carry them to a few upsets along the way.
Purdue has talent on the offensive side of the ball but their defense was completely destroyed last weekend as Notre Dame's Jimmy Clausen had a career day throwing for 275 yards and 3 TD's.
Lastly is Minnesota which had a great start to the season starting 4-0. Even though they lost last weekend to Ohio State bringing their record to 4-1 I still saw improvement. The Gophers were not blown out by the Buckeyes. They struggled to slow down the powerful Buckeyes offense but they still didn't go away as they fell short 34-21.
From all of this mess I see only one thing and that is Penn State is the clear cut favorite to win the Big Ten. After that who knows? I see it being whoever stays healthy will finish 2nd because I don't think anyone is going to run the Big Ten and it is possible that the team that finishes 2nd will not be the Buckeyes who everyone expected to run the table in the Big Ten. Should be exciting and I look forward to hearing from you to see how you think the Big Ten will end up?

Another big day by Greene wasted
The Iowa Hawkeyes received another great running attack from Shonn Greene today as he was able to compile his highest total yardage on the year with 159 yards on 21 carries before being knocked out of the game early in the 4th quarter.
Besides the big day by Greene the rest of the game was a total disaster. 5 turnovers and many of them seemed like complete mental breakdowns. Through all of the turnovers the Hawkeyes still should have won and basically handed the game to Northwestern who looked like the worst 5-0 team in the country. The Hawkeyes gave them the game and it looked like they didn't want to take it. In the end a win is a win and they got it done. But I would like to go the final 4 plays of the game which completely confused me.
I was never a big fan of Ken O'Keefe because I can't understand the play calling half of the time but today when his offense had a chance for a comeback in the end he didn't give them the opportunity to get it done. First off, I don't care if Shonn Greene is hurt, with 1st and goal from the 8 yard line you still have to run the football at least a couple of times considering you have been able to run all over the Northwestern defense all game long. Okay well that's done and over with you don't run the ball. But at least call passing plays that give you a chance. You can't throw jump balls every play and hope your guy comes up with it. I would have liked some crossing routes or something that may mix up the defense. It didn't happen and the Hawkeyes suffered an extremely disappointing loss for the second week in a row. So please figure out how to call plays that give yourselves a chance by next week.
This is the way I felt and I would love to hear about what others think because it completely blew my mind because as today showed I think we are a much better team than Northwestern and should have won despite 5 turnovers.

Week 5 Picks
Alright so the Big Ten season starts for 10 teams this weekend with Purdue facing Notre Dame. This weekend should be the best source as far as predicting the rest of the season because everyone will be able to see how the size up against their Big Ten foes after relatively easy scheduling for the beginning of the season. So who's going to make it out of this weekend? Look no further as I predict this weekends matchups.
-Lets start with Iowa vs Northwestern. Yes Northwestern is 4-0 and the Hawkeyes had a disappointing loss last weekend but I think they will be able to over power the Wildcats defense that looks much improved from a year ago. Of course this one will not be a blowout because the Hawkeyes always struggle against the spread offense. I think the game changer in this matchup will be Shonn Greene as he has another big day.
I'll say the Hawkeyes 38, Northwestern 27
- Next up is Michigan State vs Indiana. Last week Indiana struggled and were completely dominated by the Ball State offense. This week will be no different as running back Javon Ringer continues to put up Heisman like numbers.
Michigan State 42, Indiana 17.
- The third matchup is Ohio State vs Minnesota. Will the Buckeyes finally wake up and play like they are capable of? I believe so especially with the return of running back Chris "Beanie" Wells. Terrelle Pryor continues to grow as a quarterback and the Buckeyes will dominate the Gophers handing them their first loss.
Ohio State 48, Minnesota 21
- Next is Purdue vs Notre Dame. The only matchup this weekend that doesn't involve two Big Ten games should be interesting. Notre Dame looks improved and Purdue's defense hasn't really showed up this year. That is what I think makes this game such a difficult one to pick. Will Jimmy Clausen be able to expose the Boilermakers defense and give the Irish a victory? I'm going to say no although it will be close.
Purdue 32, Notre Dame 24.
- My next game is what I see as a trap game for Wisconsin. Sure they are playing a Michigan team that hasn't been able to get things going this season. Both teams had a bye week last week and I think this may help Michigan the most as they needed time to grow and tighten things up. The strength of the Wolverines is their defense which gives them a chance in this game. If Wisconsin looks ahead to their next two games against Ohio State and Penn State they could fall victim to the upset. I'm going to say with the week off Wisconsin had time to get more healthy and will be ready for this contest but it won't be a blowout.
Wisconsin 24, Michigan 20
- The last game I will look into is the biggest of the week and will reveal a lot about the Big Ten and who will step up to take over the conference when Penn State welcomes Illinois to Happy Valley. Juice Williams has proven he can step up to challenges as he did last year at Ohio State but Williams isn't my issue when it comes to Illinois. It's the defense that is going to have to come up huge against the spread HD offense of Penn State that has averaged 52.8 points per game. This will be the first true test to see where the Nittany Lions stand this year.
Penn State 42, Illinois 28.
Season Record(Started Week 3) 16-3

Power Shift in the Big Ten Part 2
So last week I took a look into the Penn State Nittany Lions who I view as the top team in the Big Ten this year. But you never know what may happen with the Big Ten season getting underway this weekend. This week I will take a look at the Wisconsin Badgers and last years cinderella Illinois.
Lets start with Wisconsin. Yes, I think they are overrated even though they now sit at #9 in the rankings. They have a big win at Fresno State in Week 3 but I'm not completely sold that they are for real. Their next 3 games will say a lot about their team. They start this weekend with a trip to Ann Arbor. Wisconsin should dominate this game but if they start slow like they have been known to do this year the game could end up closer than most would expect. After that they have home contests with Ohio State and Penn State which will make or break their season. With a defense that is usually strong and a strong running attack with PJ Hill anything can happen. There defense could be just strong enough and the running of PJ Hill could prove just enough to get them a Big Ten Championship.
So what about the Illini? There defense has looked rough and the offense hasn't looked as dominant as they were in the Week 1 loss to Missouri. They were only able to beat Louisiana Lafayette 20-17. With a bye week Ron Zook was given time to prepare his team for their Big Ten opener at Penn State this weekend. Will this game prove that this Illini team is not ready to repeat the success of last season or will they shock everyone and get momentum to carry them through the year? Juice Williams has the weapons with Arrelious Benn and running back Daniel Dufrene is starting to get things going as he is averaging 6.7 yards per carry. The biggest question in my opinion is will the defense show up? That will ultimately determine the fate of this Illini team because the offense will not struggle all season long.
Come back next week for a look inside what I view as the final two Big Ten contenders in Michigan State and Iowa.

Week 4 Recap
-Come back each week for my recap of each week every Monday as I look into what happened the past weekends action and look back on my predictions and how I fared.
I would like to take a look at my Week 4 picks because this week left me scratching my head quite a bit. This was especially true during the Iowa, Pitt game because the Hawkeyes completely dominated the game in every way possible except for on the scoreboard. Pitt had a few good drives that resulted in touchdowns but besides that they looked terrible. Then there is the fact that Northwestern has a decent defense and their offense looks mediocre compared to the numbers they usually put up. Another thing that caught my eye is maybe Minnesota is a better team than anyone expected. After being the laughing stock of the Big Ten Minnesota beat Florida Atlantic which made a bowl game a year ago pretty easily 37-3. So with Ohio State's rough start to the year and the rest of the Big Ten being full of surprises lets recap Week 4.
My Pick, Actual Score
Ohio State 32 ,Troy 20
Ohio State 28, Troy 10
- I was expecting more of a let down from Ohio State in this game after USC but they played much better and may have found a new quarterback. Highly touted freshman Terrelle Pryor got the start and was 10/16 for 139 yards, 4TD's and an INT to go along with 66 yards rushing. The buckeyes could be back on track but time will only tell now that the Big Ten season kicks off this weekend.
Penn State 58, Temple 13
Penn State 45, Temple 3
-Penn State looked dominant once again as they rushed out to a 31-0 lead at the half. The Penn State offense once again was spreading the ball around which makes them a very difficult team to defend. They once again gave me no reason not to think they are the top team in the Big Ten this year.
Northwestern 24, Ohio 17
Northwestern 16, Ohio 8
-I guess this is the one game that really got me thinking this weekend. Northwestern has great leadership on offense in QB CJ Bacher and RB Tyrell Sutton which has been dominant since they have been at Northwestern. Now all of a sudden they can't do anything and they have a strong defense. The Wildcats are 4-0 but are going to need the explosive offense they once had to show up in the Big Ten to give themselves a chance.
Minnesota 24, Florida Atlantic 20
Minnesota 37, Florida Atlantic 3
-This one I was way off because after watching Florida Atlantic and Minnesota a couple of times last year I expected the Gophers to have a much more difficult time in this game. From that I guess the question I have is whether Minnesota is a greatly improved team from a year ago? We will see soon enough.
Iowa 24, Pitt 17
Iowa 20, Pitt 21
-I guess I expected Iowa to have a handle on this game when I made my prediction. Then by looking at the stats from the game Iowa did dominate the game they just couldn't put the points on the board. The Hawkeyes look like they could be having a good team if they can put the pieces together. The running game is solid and the defense looked dominant after a slow start. The issue is still at the quarterback position and it still doesn't look like anyone wants to take that job over yet.
Purdue 35, Central Michigan 13
Purdue 32, Central Michigan 25
- Purdue was lucky to pull out a win in this one. With the score 24- 17 in favor of Purdue the Chippewas scored a touchdown with 1:18 to go and then converted on the two point conversion to give themselves a 25-24 lead. Moments later Purdue RB Kory Sheets busts a 46 yard touchdown run to give the Boilermakers a 32-25 victory.
Michigan State 30, Notre Dame 24
Michigan State 23, Notre Dame 7
-Michigan State was much more dominant than I expected. I believed Notre Dame would be confident coming into this one after destroying Michigan a week ago. However, Michigan State showed why it is a team that could contend for a Big Ten Championship this year. One again Javon Ringer ran all over the oppenent as he rushed for 201 yards and 2 TD's. This was consecutive 200 yard rushing performances and will definitely bring some Heisman talk to East Lansing.
Indiana 17, Ball State 27
Indiana 20, Ball State 42
-This game really showed a lot about Indiana who coming into this game hadn't been challenged. I figured they would struggle with the connection of Davis to Love but once Dante Love was carted off the field in the 2nd quarter I was a little sketchy as to how Ball State would respond in the 2nd half. They came out firing and handled Indiana pretty easily. The story line of this game is however, the loss of star wide reciever Love who will probably never play football again after the hit he took in the 2nd quarter.
Come back next Monday when I recap Week 5 in the Big Ten.

Week 4 Preview
Week 4 in the Big Ten is a week where some middle of the road teams can prove themselves and give them some momentum going into Big Ten play next week. Three games really come to mind this week where the Big Ten really needs to prove itself.
1) Iowa at Pittsburgh- This matchup is extremely intriguing because although Iowa has looked dominant so far, this is their first road test. The Iowa defense will have face one of the best running backs in the country in LeSean McCoy which could show everyone just how good the Iowa defense may or may not be. Then there is the question at quarterback which I believe should no longer be a question. In my opinion Stanzi proved last week that he doesn't have the experience or comfort level against better competition. If Christensen can make some plays and not turn the ball over against Pitt he will be the starter for this season.
2) Northwestern vs Ohio- Northwestern has looked like an improved team this season as they are looking to make a bowl game. After a 3-0 start this week could show a lot as the Wildcats face a Ohio team that gave Ohio State a run in Week 2. This game could also be a gauge for the Big Ten and show us how good Ohio State may be this year if Northwestern is able to dominate Ohio.
3) Michigan State vs Notre Dame- Michigan State's Javon Ringer has been running all over everyone as he has piled up 498 yards and 9 TD's through the first 3 Weeks. This game looks to be a good one since Michigan State hasn't really played anyone since their Week 1 loss at Cal. Now they are facing an upstart Notre Dame program that dominate Michigan 35-17 last weekend.
Now for my Week 4 Picks
Ohio State 32, Troy 20 - Buckeyes don't appear to have things clicking this year but have too much talent for Troy even without running back Chris "Beanie" Wells.
Penn State 58, Temple 13- Penn State continues to prove they are the top team in the Big Ten this year as they continue to dominate their opponents.
Northwestern 24, Ohio 17- Northwestern gets off to a 4-0 start as QB CJ Bacher and RB Tyrell Sutton prove too much for Ohio although they make it a tough game.
Minnesota 24, Florida Atlantic 20- Minnesota gets a scare from a solid Florida Atlantic offense but the Owls defense just can't stop the Gophers.
Iowa 24, Pittsburgh 17- Iowa defense faces its toughest challenge of the year but are up for it as they do just enough. Christensen throws for 2 TD's to secure his spot as the starter.
Purdue 35, Central Michigan 13- Purdue comes out firing after a disappointing loss to Oregon in overtime. Boilermakers offense too much for Central Michigan.
Michigan State 30, Notre Dame 24- Not much defense in this game but too much Javon Ringer carries Michigan State past an improved Notre Dame squad.
Indiana 17, Ball State 27- Close game but Ball State gets the win as Indiana's secondary can't slow down Quarterback Nate Davis and WR Dante Love.
Season Record(starter Week 3): 8-2

Power Shift in the Big Ten?
Now that three weeks are in the books the Big Ten is looking quite different from the past. Michigan is the worst team in the Big Ten and Ohio State isn't looking as dominant as usual. After a close call against Ohio and a devastating loss to USC, the Buckeyes are out of national championship talk. They need to focus on the Big Ten. Will they turn it up and dominate the Big Ten or is the Big Ten looking to someone else to lead the way?
With the Buckeyes so down early this year who is stepping up their game and could carry the Big Ten flag to the finish line? For the next three weeks I will take a look at the five teams I believe have the best chance. I've chosen to look at Penn State, Wisconsin, Illinois, Michigan State and Iowa. This week I will look into the Penn State Nittany Lions.
I believe Penn State is the best in the Big Ten at this moment. The offense is unstoppable averaging 55 points per game the first three weeks. My biggest question mark regarding the Nittany Lions so far is are they done with off the field issues and will they affect the team as the year goes on? It's easy to say it won't but if players are gone because they are suspended for a week or two it will affect the team because the players won't be able to play together and you may not line up with the same people each week. If they are to win the Big Ten it might come down to a showdown in Madison with the Wisconsin Badgers October 11th. With the way Wisconsin has played so far I think Penn State could beat the Badgers in Madison where they have not lost under Coach Bielema. With the way Penn State has been playing so far there is no reason they can't take Coach Paterno for a wild ride this season.

Top Ten Sports Moments of the Last Ten Years
These moments in sports history from the past ten years are my top ten because of a number of reasons. They are what first came to my mind when I thought about it and they were the events that really had me glued to the TV. So here they are and I'm sure many of you will agree or disagree or at least relate in some way.
10)Candace Parker. I'm sure not many people saw this one coming. But hey I'll give you my reasoning. First woman to announce her college commitment on ESPNNEWS. First to dunk in an NCAA tournament game and first to dunk twice in an NCAA game. In my opinion she is the Michael Jordan of the WNBA and will only help the WNBA gain more popularity.
9)Dale Ernhardt dies on the final lap of the Daytona 500. February 18th, 2001 a racing legend dies doing what he did best. This is a moment that caught everyone's attention even if they weren't interested in racing.
8)Barry Bonds passes Hank Aaron as the all time home run king. No matter how anyone feels about it, Barry Bonds' 756th home run belongs in the top ten. It will never be towards the top in my opinion because of the steroids and speculation. However, it still belongs in a historical context.
7)Baseball and steroids. This is to follow up on Barry Bonds making history. This will always be an issue that will probably never be solved. But to me it is a big deal because I love watching baseball and the issue of steroids always seems to come up when anything great happens so really how do I know when events or historical occurrences are pure or not?
6)Bartman. Not much explanation needed. This makes the list because it made me extremely sad. Would any fan have done the same thing in his situation? Probably but it just sucks that it had to happen to the Cubs in that situation.
5)Mark McGwire/ Sammy Sosa home run chase. In the 1998 season this hr chase had me constantly watching. Mainly because Sammy Sosa was part of the Cubs. Another reason it was such a big deal to me was because McGwires 62nd home run that broke Roger Maris' single season home run record came against the Cubs and gave me goosebumps because I just felt the importance of that home run.
4)Michael Phelps in Beijing. His 8 gold medals that broke swimmer Mark Spitz's record of 7 gold medals had my complete attention when it came to the 2008 Summer Games. Everyday I was looking for when his next race was just so that I could see him win over and over again.
3) Super Bowl 42. On February 3 2008 in Glendale, AZ the Giants were able to pull off an unthinkable upset versus the then 18-0 New England Patriots which everyone had them as a lock to go undefeated. David Tyree's catch was probably the most exciting and unbelievable catch I have ever seen given the situation.
2)2006 National Championship between Texas and USC. This game was amazing because of the way Vince Young carried Texas to victory. USC was extremely talented and I thought they would dominate with Reggie Bush and Leinart but Young's third rushing TD of the game with 19 seconds left in the game is one of the most memorable moments in my mind when it comes to sports.
1) Tiger Woods at Torrey Pines. I love playing golf and watch it every once in a while. But the way Tiger played the 2008 US Open Championship was amazing. Coming back 2 months after surgery is just crazy when it comes to walking 91 holes. But being able to win was unthinkable. I couldn't believe what I was seeing watching this tournament and it showed just how strong Tiger Woods is. His 14th major championship and probably the greatest tournament run of all time.
Hope you enjoy and look forward to comments on what you think about these top 10 moments from the last 10 years.

Big Ten takes steps forward but one giant step back
The Big Ten overall had a solid weekend going 7-3 in what were by far the toughest matchups of the year for many teams. Penn State and Wisconsin showed that they are legit to be considered in the top tier of the Big Ten.
Lets take a look at the other teams around the Big Ten that really show it has taken a step forward as far as a power conference.
1)Iowa's defense continued to look strong against a much stronger opponent as they were able to defeat the Cyclones 17-5.
2)Northwestern after barely escaping Duke last week came out and proved they are a better team by beating Southern Illinois 33-7.
3)Michigan State's defense came together to shutout Florida Atlantic 17-0.
4)Minnesota avoids being upset in back to back years by defeating Montana State 35-23. The win moved the Gophers to 3-0 on the season.
While the Big Ten overall showed improvement some things did worry me.
1)The Illini can still not get things together. Although they won their defense still can not stop their opponent. Juice Williams couldn't get the offense going and they just escaped at home versus Louisiana Lafayette 20-17.
2)Michigan yet again proved that they have a long ways to go before they are able to compete in the Big Ten. They committed 6 turnovers and were completely dominated by Notre Dame 35-17. If Michigan hopes to do anything this year they need to limit their mistakes and their defense has to play like it's capable of doing. If their defense has a let up it is going to be a long year because the offense will not be able to carry them.
Although I expected Ohio State to lose to USC their performance was disappointing and was a huge step backwards as far as the Big Ten is concerned. I say this because every year Ohio State is considered the Big Ten's best chance at a National Championship. After being completely dominated in the big game the past two years the Buckeyes showed that if they have a long ways to go before they are playing for a National Championship. They need to start worrying about the Big Ten Championship because after back to back poor performances they need to step up their game or else they won't even be the top team in the Big Ten. It's not the loss to USC that concerns me all that much. It's the fact that they barely escaped Ohio in Week 2 and they were dominated by USC.
To me the Big Ten is a much more competitive conference now than a year ago. The Buckeyes have shown that anyone can play with them and the worst team from a year ago (Minnesota) are 3-0. This should be a long and exciting season in the Big Ten because who knows who will be left standing at the end.

Week 3 Pick Em'
Finally some real football is played. After a rather boring first couple of weeks in the Big Ten, Week 3 should be the exact opposite. There are five games this week that I think could have a huge effect on the rest of the season.
1. The biggest game of the week is Ohio State at USC which will probably determine the national championship fate of both teams.
2.Then there is the in-state rivalry of Iowa v. Iowa State with both teams coming in at 2-0.
3.Although both teams look sluggish Michigan at Notre Dame is always a grind it out game.
4. Purdue v. Oregon should be an interesting contest where two high powered offenses go head to head.
5. Lastly is Wisconsin at Fresno State. This game should show a lot about Wisconsin this year as they have been able to over come slow starts so far this year.
Looking at just those five games already has me excited for this weekend because I can finally see some highly competitive teams. This week will also tell everyone in the country how the Big Ten will be this year.
Week 3 Picks
Ohio State 17, USC 35
- Even with running back Chris "Beanie" Wells this would have been a tall order for the Buckeyes but now that there is even a possibility he won't play tells me that he's not healthy enough to make the impact they need to pull out a victory in L.A. USC offense and defense just too much for the Buckeyes especially at home.
Iowa 27, Iowa State 17
- Cyclones run into a stout Iowa defense that doesn't allow them to put up the points they were in their first two contests. Iowa running game led by Shonn Greene leads the Hawkeyes to a 3-0 start and Iowa regains state bragging rights.
Michigan 17, Notre Dame 13
- Not much offense in this game. The Michigan defensive line limits Jimmy Clausen and the Irish offense while their offense does just enough to get the win.
Purdue 28, Oregon 38
- This game will be tight early on. But I think Oregon's team speed proves too tall a task for the Boilermakers.
Wisconsin 24, Fresno State 35
- After already posting an impressive 24-7 win at Rutgers in Week 1 I think the Fresno State Bulldogs pull this one out. Slow start finally catches up to the Badgers on the road.
Penn State 48, Syracuse 7
- I think Penn State has been the most consistent team in the Big Ten so far and could give the Buckeyes a run for the Big Ten title. Nittany Lions are too strong of a team and run all over Syracuse in the Carrier Dome.
Northwestern 31, Southern Illinois 24
- The Wildcats offense gets things together against the Southern Illinois' defense but the Saluki's offense is able to keep it close.
Illinois 48, Louisiana-Lafayette 21
- Illini defense still has work to do but Juice Williams and the offense will carry the team to victory against an over matched Louisiana-Lafayette team.
Minnesota 28, Montana State 14
-Minnesota offense struggles early as they try to replace running back Duane Bennett. But the Golden Gophers don't let an upset like last year to North Dakota State happen again.
Michigan State 38, Florida Atlantic 21
- Florida Atlantic offense is able to test the Spartans defense but Michigan State quarterback Brian Hoyer has big game against a Florida Atlantic defense that hasn't been able to get it done so far this year.
I've been waiting for this week to come so that I can finally see where teams are at and get a little clearer picture on how the Big Ten could turn out. There could be numerous upsets but who should really be on upset alert this weekend?

Buckeyes.... then who?
Every year it seems the Ohio State Buckeyes are the class of the Big Ten. Every year before now it seems like Michigan is usually selected number 2 but now that they have fallen off the face of the earth who will it be this year? Will it be one of the other Big Ten powers like Wisconsin or Penn State? Or could it be another unexpected team that pulls off what the Illini were able to do last year?
I'm going to have to pass on the Badgers because I feel like every year they have these high expectations and they never live up to them. Although they have their toughest games at home in the form of Ohio State and Penn State who's to say they won't lose both or one of those games. Another issue I have with them this year is that they have been starting slow against inferior opponents. If they don't pick it up as the year goes on they won't be able to make up for their slow starts in the Big Ten.
I do believe Penn State is a definite contender. Their offense has been explosive scoring 111 points in their first two games. They are also a traditionally solid defensive team. Therefore if their offense continues to produce at the rate they are I don't see how many teams will be able to keep up with them. Their match up at Ohio State will be a tough one but even if they do lose it won't keep them from finishing 2nd in the Conference. I see the key to their season will be escaping Wisconsin with a victory on October 11th. The only thing I see keeping the Nittany Lions from playing to their potential are the off the field issues. As long as their players can stay out of trouble off the field they shouldn't have much of a problem on it.
Every year is filled with surprises so why not make a pick of my own. I believe the team that could pull off what Illinois did last year are the Iowa Hawkeyes.
I'll give 5 reasons why I believe it is possible and one is not because I am a Hawkeye fan.
1. They are flying under the radar.
2. Yes they haven't played anyone yet but the defense has been excellent allowing only 3 points in two games and have yet to let an opponent in the red zone.
3. The question mark on the running game is all but gone. If the trio of Greene, O'Meara, and Hampton can have a solid showing against the Cyclones I believe they will be dependable all year round.
4. The offensive line has really improved from last year. Opening up huge running lanes and only allowing one sack so far.
5. Home games against Penn State and Wisconsin. Also not having Ohio State helps because that is more than likely a loss for everyone that has to face them.
Now's a chance to take your pick. Who do you think will finish 2nd in the Big Ten and who do you think is a sleeper team that will be the talk of the Big Ten at the end of the season?

Midweek Buzz in the Big Ten
Tressel quiet about Wells' injury
While everyone around college football is curious about what exactly is wrong with Buckeye star running back Chris "Beanie" Wells. Tressel is forcing everyone to play the waiting game. All that has been revealed is that it is a toe injury. With a game against Ohio coming back it would make sense to sit him out. But will he be ready for the showdown with USC in Week 3? Is Tressel playing mind games to keep USC on its toes or does he not want to reveal that the injury that could really limit his stud running back? I guess we will just have to wait and see.
Northwestern looks to prove themselves
Northwestern is usually a team that falls into the bottom half of the Big Ten standings year after year. After a solid 30-10 victory over Syracuse in Week 1, the Wildcats are looking to keep things going at Duke in week 2. Now everyone may think this will be a blowout because Duke football is just a joke. However, last year Duke came into Northwestern and upset them 20-14. So the Wildcats will look to prove themselves as solid football team and get revenge for last year.
Can Michigan's offense get it going?
With another disappointing home loss in week 1 Michigan is looking to rebound. The biggest question mark from Week 1 was the new spread offense that Coach Rodriquez brought from West Virginia. The offense was only able to compile 203 yards of total offense. The quarterback situation is a huge question mark and it looks as if redshirt freshman Steven Threet will get the start over sophmore Nick Sheridan in Week 2 after his performance of the second half last week.
Hawkeyes look to continue progressing on offense
After a solid running performance from Shonn Greene and Jewel Hampton in Week 1 against Maine the offense still looks to improve. With many of the questions in regard to the running game answered the pressure now turns to the quarterback play. Although both Jake Christensen and Ricky Stanzi did nothing to cost their team the game they also didn't do anything that stood out that will help them win against better competition. Combined the quarterbacks were 18/29 for 212 yards a TD and an INT. The numbers don't look terrible but their were some questionable throws and the Hawkeyes can expect to see better run defenses in the future that force them to throw more.
Can the Illini defense hold their own?
Watching the Illinois/ Missouri game last week I was disgusted by the play of the Illini defense. Quarterback Juice Williams and the offense did their part, scoring 42 points but the defense and special teams couldn't stop the Missouri offense. Terrible tackling and coverage was a definite hole in the defense. If the Illini hope to repeat or come close to the success they achieve in 2007 they will have to work harder on the defensive side of the ball because the offense will be there.

Reviewing Week 1 in the Big Ten
Intro About Me
My name is Kyle Prieboy and I am just interested in sports all together. I am senior at The University of Iowa and a double major in English and Journalism. I hope to be a sports reporter in the future and being in the middle of Big Ten country I thought it would be fitting to look into one of the most exciting parts of the year Big Ten Football. Hope you enjoy.
The Recap
Iowa 46, Maine 3
Coming into this season the Hawkeyes' offense was a big question mark. The rushing attack proved to be up for the challenge as Shonn Greene rushed for 109 yards and a TD and freshman Jewel Hampton added 68 yards and 2 TD's. This can be attributed to the much improved offensive line play which allowed only 1 sack on the Saturday. However, the quarterback situation is still in question as both Jake Christensen and Ricky Stanzi played equal minutes.
Northwestern 30, Syracuse 10
The Northwestern offense struggled early on but got things going once the first game jitters were out of the way as two seniors led the way for the Wildcats. Highly rated quarterback Terrelle Pryor played as advertised as he showed off his legs in the 4th quarter as he rushed for an 18 yard touchdown The biggest note from this game would have to be the foot injury to star Running Back Chris Wells in the third quarter.
Utah 25, Michigan 23
For the second year in a row the Michigan Wolverines begin the season being upset in the "Big House." Michigan couldn't get Coach Rodriquez's new spread offense going in this game as they could only pile up 203 yards of total offense. On the following kickoff Missouri return man Jeremy Maclin raced 99 yards for a touchdown putting the Tigers up 17-13 and they never looked back.
California 38, Michigan State 31
